Turning hate into love with #TheUpcycledMarch
Work
For Montreal Pride, our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee unveiled #TheUpcycledMarch, a bold initiative aimed at transforming hate into inclusive art.
Last fall, as Montreal’s streets were overtaken by protests against teaching gender identity in schools, our EDI committee decided to repurpose signs with hateful messages. These were then turned into vibrant, inclusive works of art.
Montreal-based artists on board 🎨
We enlisted ten Montreal-based illustrators and muralists to flip the narrative from negativity to positivity. Among the participating artists are Alice Demée, Charlie Bourdeau, Garçon Bonbon, Isadora Ayesha, Karma Petri, La Charbonne, Maïa Fadd, Oh Mon Doux, StudioBabyCupid and TÉO. Their unique perspectives have brought to life captivating pieces that celebrate inclusion and diversity.
A memorable day for an inspiring cause 🌈
On August 22, Galerie Hugues Charbonneau welcomed the public to discover these creations. A happy hour provided an opportunity to meet with the artists and members of our EDI committee in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Visitors also had the opportunity to participate in a collaborative artwork, adding their own personal touch to the initiative.
Every piece auctioned found a new owner, and all proceeds were donated to Aide aux Trans du Québec (ATQ), an organization dedicated to helping gender-diverse individuals and ending their social isolation.
